What an artist manager actually does, and when you need one

Managers plan careers, build teams and handle business so artists can focus on music. Here is what the job covers and when it makes sense.
An artist manager is the person responsible for the whole of an artist's career, not a single part of it. Agents book shows, labels release records, publishers handle songs. The manager connects all of them and keeps everything moving in one direction.
The day-to-day work
Most management work is planning and communication. A manager typically:
- Sets goals with the artist and turns them into a plan for releases, touring and content.
- Builds and leads the team: label, booking agent, publisher, lawyer, accountant, PR.
- Negotiates and reviews deals together with legal advice.
- Keeps track of budgets, timelines and money coming in.
- Protects the artist's time, so creative work does not get buried under emails.
What a manager is not
A manager is not a booking agent, though many help with shows early on. A manager is not a label, and should not own your recordings. A good manager also does not make decisions for you. They advise, and the artist decides.
How managers are paid
Managers usually take a commission, a percentage of the artist's income from the areas covered in the contract. The rate, the income it applies to, and what happens after the contract ends are all negotiable. Always read the agreement with a music lawyer before signing.
When you need one
You probably need a manager when the business side starts taking time away from the music. Signs include:
- Offers and opportunities arrive faster than you can answer them.
- You are about to sign a label, publishing or booking deal.
- You have a clear direction but no time to coordinate the people around it.
Before that point, many artists manage themselves well. Learning the basics yourself also makes you a better partner to a manager later.
Finding the right fit
Look for someone who understands your music, has time for you, and is honest about what they can and cannot do. Trust matters more than a famous name.
